Lighthouses and a Ferry Trip

We and our friend Isaac took a day trip driving through the Outer Banks, from Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke Island and back. There are several historic lighthouses in the Outer Banks, and each one is distinctively painted in order to provide visual identification by day for navigation.

Bodie Island Lighthouse - in operation since 1847.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse-this lighthouse was built in 1870. Due to erosion it was in danger of collapsing into the ocean, and was therefore moved 2,900 feet this summer to preserve it.

A Ferry Trip-the ferry ride between Hatteras and Ocracoke.

It was fun watching the one gull hitch a ride across the inlet ontop of the ferry's flagpole. The other gulls were jealous of his easy ride and kept trying to knock him off.

The gulls eventually left when we got to the end of the route to hitch a ferry going the other direction. I guess they just liking making the round trip.
